Arbroath Smokies

Smokey and pungent - an authentic taste of Scotland.
  (110 reviews)
Smokies were traditionally hot smoked in old oak whisky barrels in and around the fishing town of Arbroath. They gathered renown throughout Scotland and further afield in the 19th century, and have been enjoyed ever since, warm out of the barrel with the smoky juices dripping down one’s chin! Today, this intensely smoky speciality is still smoked only 50 miles away along the Aberdeenshire coast from us here at Donald Russell.

  • The genuine article – hand smoked in Arbroath with Protected Designation of Origin status

Since these are hot smoked and so are already cooked, in Arbroath they are traditionally eaten hot off the barrel as soon as they’ve finished smoking!

The next best way to eat them is to let them defrost in the fridge overnight, take them out of their packaging and open up the pair of fillets. Gently peel away the whole skeleton to remove the bones and dot the fillets with a little butter.
Reheat gently and tentatively to be sure you don’t overcook them. For best results, heat for approximately 3 minutes under a medium grill. Alternatively, the smokies can be microwaved with care – we suggest testing them after 1 minute, based on a 800W microwave oven.

These were nice, but I do probably prefer kippers. I want to try using one for fish pie, which I think would be good.
I’ve tried them as I saw them on Come Dine with Me , I thought lovely I’m going to try them when I can , the only fault I have with them is the taste was not to my liking as I found it very strong, unfortunately as I really Luv fish and all different sea food .
Very tasty indeed. Will order again.
These smokies realy live up to there names if you like smokey flavour you certainly wont be dissapointed, tender and juicy also.
Just exactly as I remember them - delicious!
These smokies are terrific!
A delicious Scottish delicacy.
The best of the purchases but the other two were so bad it wasn't hard to beat
Love smokies. We eat them warm with freshly made white bread and butter. Follow this with bread and strawberry jam (no kidding). Feast.
A taste of Arbroath very tasty
these were very tasty and made a quick lunch.
ok but not as good as kippers
Delicious - cooked eactly as advised....boned, dotted with butter and warmed under the grill. Be careful not to overcook when heating.
DO NOT OVERCOOK. I followed instructions carefully and deboned, added some butter and warmed under the grill. Beautiful!
Very nice . Good wood smokey flavour and smell. Definitely buy them again.
Not much I can say about the smokies except they are moist and have a great flavour. Perfect with fresh, homemade white bread and butter.
Made a lovely soufflé and excellent pate
Bought as part of a Christmas present for a smoked fish fan. Excellent as usual
5* product so good for Sunday brunch
a regular breakfast favourite
